Feedback from a diverse cross-section of
binocular users, including bird watchers,
hunters, boating, aviation and sports enthu-
siasts as to what makes an ”ideal” binocular
prompted Minox to design and produce the
latest addition to their growing binocular
range, the new Minox 8-14 x 40 ED Vario.
Named ‘Vario’ for their variable magnification,
these top end quality optics are a far cry from
variable magnification binoculars of the past.
Apart from the high quality optics, the Minox
‘Varios’ feature a compacted aluminium body
with tough rubber armouring that provides
the necessary protection to the optics from
everyday knocks through the wear and tear
of being used sometimes all day, every day
under all sorts of conditions.
The variable mag-
nification provides
the versatility of
several pairs of
binoculars rolled
into one. The 8x
magnification is
great for general use or scanning for your
intended subject, but with a simple twist of
a ring just below the right hand eyepiece you
can increase magnification to the popular
10x or 12x, or right up to 14x and anything
in between. At the higher magnifications, the
use of ED glass in the objective lenses comes
into its own by minimising colour fringing
(chromatic aberration) by up to 95%, while
retaining accurate colour rendition and
sharpness of the lower magnifications. All
glass surfaces are fully multi-coated and
the use of phase-corrected prisms provides
excellent light-transmission and enhances
the contrast and sharpness of the image,
especially in poor light.
The new Minox ‘Varios’ are one of the world’s
first high-performance waterproof variable
magnification binoculars and just like the
existing Minox Aspherical range they are filled
with state-of-the-art Argon gas to minimise
internal corrosion and to prevent internal fog-
ging during quick temperature or humidity
changes. The individual diopter adjustment
is an integral part of the central focus wheel
and is easily locked in place when your per-
sonal setting has
been made.
All users can benefit from the intermediate
click-stop feature of the twist-up eyecups
which gives the flexibility of three different
eye-relief settings and allows for a full field
of view when using them with spectacles.
The new Varios come complete with a Minox
neoprene strap, leather case and rainguard.
The diopter adjustment
is combined with the

Turnable adjustring for
