Function of the DIRECT SELECT lever

WARNING Risk of accident and injury due

to children left unattended in the vehicle

If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle,
they could, in particular:

open doors, thereby endangering other

persons or road users.

get out and be struck by oncoming traffic.

operate vehicle equipment and become

trapped, for example.

In addition, the children could also set the
vehicle in motion, for example by:

releasing the parking brake.

changing the transmission position.

starting the vehicle.

Never leave children unattended in the

vehicle.

When leaving the vehicle, always take the

SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.

Keep the vehicle SmartKey out of reach

of children.

WARNING Risk of accident due to incor-

rect gearshifting

If the engine speed is higher than the idle

speed and you engage the transmission posi-

tion

, the vehicle may accelerate

sharply.

If you engage the transmission position

when the vehicle is at a stand-

still, always depress the brake pedal

firmly and do not accelerate at the same

time.

You use the DIRECT SELECT lever to switch the

transmission position. The current transmission

position will appear on the display of the instru-

ment cluster (

page 175).

The shifting characteristics of the automatic trans-

mission are designed for comfortable and econom-

ical handling. For this reason, the display of the

instrument cluster shows, in addition to the trans-

mission position display, the
