Seasoning Your Cast Iron Grates

Seasoning refers to the process of coating cast iron with oil or fat then baking it in. Seasoning

cast iron protects it from rust and creates a near-nonstick cooking surface. Before using your

cast iron grill grates season them by following these steps:

1.  The cast iron grates included in your grill come shipped with a light coating of vegetable oil

to protect from rust in shipping. This is safe and is okay for some to remain on during the

seasoning process. You do want to remove dust from the grates.

2.  Rinse the grates with warm water to remove any dust then dry thoroughly with a towel. Use

a mild soap if desired but rinse thoroughly if soap is used.

3.  Using a paper towel, rag, or basting brush apply vegetable oil or shortening to the cast iron

cooking grates, coating all the cast iron. You can also use a non-stick spray.

4.  Start the grill using a small amount of charcoal (Grates can be seasoned at the same time

the grill is being cured.)

5.  Place the Cast Iron grill grates in your grill bring the temperature at about 350 degrees and

let cook for about 40 minutes.

6.  Let the grill cool down, your grates should be seasoned and ready for use.

7.  Rust will naturally occur on exposed cast iron. If you do see rust on the grates, a spot of

cooking spray should do the trick. Continue to re-season regularly during the season by

adding more oil or spray and letting it bake into the cast iron. The more the grill is used the

more the grates will be naturally seasoned. This gives you a great reason to grill often.
