Qualified mini-SAS to mini-SAS 0.5 m (1.64') cables are used to connect cascaded Storage Enclosures
in the rack. The “mini-SAS to mini-SAS” cable uses SFF-8088 to SFF-8088 connectors.
•
The maximum cable length allowed in any configuration is 2 m (6.56').
•
Cables required, if not included, must be separately purchased.
•
Use only Lenovo Storage or OEM-qualified cables for host connection. A qualified SFF-8466 to
SFF-8088 cable option is used for connecting a Storage Enclosure to a server-based RAID adapter.
The rear-panel views of the D1024 and D1012 are identical. All storage enclosures use mini-SAS
connectors for expansion.
NOTE:
The D1012/D1024 Storage Enclosures and compatible Storage Enclosures support 6 Gb
SFF-8088 mini-SAS connectors for adding storage.

IMPORTANT:
The D1024 and D1012 Storage Enclosures can be configured with single or dual ESMs. If
the D1012/D1024 Storage Enclosure is configured with a single ESM, it must be installed in the upper slot,
and an ESM blank must be installed in the lower slot (shown above). This configuration is required to allow
sufficient air flow through the enclosure during operation.
Replacing an environmental services module (ESM)
on page 43 for additional information.
The Storage Enclosures can be either of the same type (all D1024s or all D1012s) or they can be a mixture
of these models. Since Storage Enclosures use SAS2.0 expanders and a 6 Gb SAS link-rate, they can be
connected in any desired sequence within the array. If some Storage Enclosures contain 3 Gb drives,
slightly better performance will result if they are positioned as the last enclosure(s).
IMPORTANT:
Guidelines for stacking enclosures in the rack are provided in the rackmount bracket kit
installation sheet provided with your product.
Testing enclosure connections
Power cycling procedures vary according to the type of power supply unit (PSU) provided with the
enclosure. Some enclosure models are equipped with PSUs possessing power switches; whereas
D1012/D1024 Storage Enclosures use PSUs that have no power switch.
