Lighting Information and Operation
WARNING
If you do not follow these instructions exactly, a fire
or explosion may result causing property damage,
personal injury or loss of life.
BEFORE LIGHTING
smell all around the appliance area
for gas. Be sure to smell next to the floor because some
gas is heavier than air and will settle on the floor.
Use only your hand to turn the gas control knob(s). Never
use tools. If the knob will not turn by hand, do not try to repair
it, call a qualified service technician. Force or attempted re-
pair may result in a fire or explosion.
PLACING UNIT INTO OPERATION
(Millivolt Valves with Piezo Ignitor)
Fireplaces which include a millivolt valve are equipped
with a pilot which must be lit by a Piezo ignitor (red ignitor
button). When lighting the pilot, follow these instructions
exactly.
GAS VALVE OPERATION - Millivolt Valve (Figure 2)

In applications using an optional wall-mounted
switch or optional thermostat -
Turn
OFF
ap-
pliance-mounted switch and leave
OFF.
Turn
OFF
wall-mounted switch or set thermostat to lowest set-
ting.
In applications using only an appliance-mounted
switch -
Turn
OFF
appliance-mounted switch.
3 - Turn off all electrical power to appliance.
Insert the tip of a finger of each hand (with the back of the
hands toward the panel) into the cutout in the bottom of
the panel at the positions shown, and rotate the panel
down.
The control access panel becomes hot during
unit operation, and must be opened with care:

4 - Open the control access panel. See figure1. Push in
gas control knob slightly and turn clockwise
to
OFF
.
NOTE - Knob cannot be turned from
PILOT
to
OFF
un-
less knob is pushed in slightly. Do not force.
5 - Wait five (5) minutes to clear out any gas. If you then
smell gas,
STOP
! Immediately call your gas supplier
from a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas supplier’s in-
structions. If you do not smell gas go to next step.
6 - Press partially and turn gas valve knob counter-
clockwise
to
PILOT
.
7 - Push control knob in until it stops and hold knob in this
position. Immediately light the pilot by pushing the red
Piezo ignitor button. Continue to press control knob for
25 seconds after the pilot is lit. Release knob. It should
pop back up. Pilot should remain lit. If pilot goes out, re-
peat steps 5 through 10.

11- Close the control access panel.
NOTE - If gas valve is turned to
OFF
from
ON
or
PILOT
while appliance is in operation, gas valve will latch in
OFF
position for 25 seconds.
TURNING OFF GAS TO UNIT
1 - Turn
OFF
appliance-mounted switch, and in addition, if
wall-mounted switch or thermostat is used, turn
OFF
wall-mounted switch or set thermostat to lowest setting.
2 - Turn off all electrical power to appliance.
3 - Open the control access panel. See figure1.
4 - Push in gas control knob slightly and turn clock-
wise
to
OFF
. Do not force.
5 - Close the control access panel.
