Terms Used
Apochromatic optics
An improved achromat. While achromatic
optics are only corrected for the colors of red
and blue, apochromatic optics correct for
three colors (red, blue and green). This signifi-
cantly reduces blurring caused by color seams
compared to the achromats.
Working distance
The free distance between the objective and
the sample surface if the microscope is in focus.
Resolution capacity (resolution)
The ability of a microscope to reveal fine details.
It is specified as the smallest distance between
two lines or points that can still be seen sepa-
rately and not appear as an individual smudged
object.
The resolution capacity is a function of the
wavelength of the light used and the numerical
aperture.
Diffuser
The diffuser illuminates the samples from a
large range of angles. This illuminates reflec-
tive samples in a more uniform manner and
prevents glares in the image.
Focus
The point at which the light beams passing
through a lens intersect to form an image.
Calibration
Determination of the deviation of the measur-
ing system from normal.
Coaxial illumination
This illumination mode is used to illuminate
the sample directly from above from direction
of viewing. This is primarily advantageous for
flat, reflective surfaces. The contrast dial is used
to suppress unwanted reflections by rotating a
λ/4 plate. The normal position of the controller
is the extinction position. The bright setting
should only be used by experienced users for
flat samples (e.g. metal sections, semiconduc-
tors or coatings).
