event, as the photo of the couple from the
Carnival in Venice clearly shows. This
works equally well with objects in nature:
look how the blurred swathes of water set
the stage for a solitary pine cone on a
mossy stone. Often enough, it is the details
that make a subject interesting: a window
cross, a door handle, a weathered poster, a
person’s hands. It is the selective view of
the longer focal length that captures the
essence of a scene.
