Nach Napoleons Niederlage im Jahr 1814 und der Besetzung
von Paris durch die Preußen wurde die Quadriga wieder
nach Berlin gebracht und der Lorbeerkranz der Viktoria
wurde durch ein neues Symbol der preußischen Macht
ersetzt, ein eichenlaubumkränztes Eisernes Kreuz. 1933
marschierten die Nationalsozialisten bei ihrem martialischen
Fackelzug zur Feier ihrer Machtergreifung durch das Tor
und leiteten damit das dunkelste Kapitel der deutschen
Geschichte ein, an dessen Ende die Stadt in Trümmern lag
und Deutschland geteilt wurde.

Bei der Aufteilung Berlins nach dem 2. Weltkrieg fiel das

Zentrum der Stadt in den Sowjetischen Sektor, der am

Brandenburger Tor an den Britischen Sektor grenzte. Nach
einigen Demonstrationen gegen den Bau der Berliner
Mauer schlossen die Sowjets das Brandenburger Tor am 14.

August 1961. Es sollte bis zum Mauerfall am 22. Dezember

1989 geschlossen bleiben, als Ost- und Westberlin wieder
vereint waren.
