It has often been remarked that Mies
raised the house above the ground in an
attempt to raise it above the water during
fl oods. But also, the eff ect of the raised
fl oor has another, completely dramatic,
eff ect of heightening the transparency
created by the fl ood of light entering on all
sides through the glass walls.
