Protect Spike Extensions
Figure 3-3
Unhook Bale Spear With Spike Extensions
WARNING
!
To avoid serious injury or death:
Bale spikes on end of extension arms are at head height and
can impale the head. When not in use, spikes on the ends of the
extension arms should be removed or their pointed ends
should be protected with a padded cover.
Any time the Bale Spear with spike extensions is not in
use, the spikes on the end of the extensions should be
removed or their points should be guarded with a padded
cover such as with a tennis ball (#3) or another type of
padded material to protect against injury caused by
bumping into one of the points. Customer to provide
padded material.
If removing the spikes, loosen bolts (#1) and remove
spikes (#2) from the extension arms. Store spikes in a
safe location where they can be found and children will
not be playing with them.
If covering pointed end of spikes (#2), make sure the
padded covering, such as a tennis ball (#3) with slits cut
into the ball, is well suited for protecting against someone
bumping into the point and become injured. Also make
sure the padded covers cannot come loose and fall from
the spikes easily.

General Operating Instructions
By now you should have familiarized yourself with the
Operator’s Manual for your Bale Spear. If you have not,
please do so now.
Proceed by getting onto the seat of your skid steer or
tractor and starting it up. It isn’t going to take you long to
learn how to use your new Land Pride Bale Spear, but we
do recommend that you take a little time to practice
securely attaching and detaching your Bale Spear to and
from your tractor/skid steer hitch. It is also important to
practice entering a bale safely, inserting the spears,
picking up the bale, traveling with the bale, and placing
the bale on a level site. Review
on
page 14 until you gain the confidence and skill needed to
have a good feel in what you are doing.
We cannot over stress the importance of knowing and
putting into practice the safety operating procedures
spelled out in this Operator’s Manual. The more skilled
and adept you become at using your Bale Spear, the
sooner you can start safely picking up and stacking your
bales.
It is also important to focus on the don’ts. For example:
•
Don’t exceed lift capacity of your Bale Spear and
tractor/skid steer.
•
Don’t lift your bale too high creating an unstable
machine and unsafe situation.
•
Don’t travel with your bale tilted forward, setting up a
situation that could cause your bale to fall.
•
Don’t drive too fast for your ground conditions.
•
Don’t work on or around slippery or sloped areas that
could cause you to lose control of the skid steer or
tractor.
•
Don’t allow pedestrians, pets, or livestock to approach
the danger zone of your working area.
•
Don’t leave your skid steer or loader with the Bale
Spear off the ground.
If you follow the safety instructions and operating
instructions in this manual, you will find that you can
quickly become very adept, handy, and skillful at using
your Land Pride Bale Spear.
