This chapter introduces the controls, indicators, and interfaces used by operators STE (Secure Terminal

An overview illustration of a typical Office and Tactical STE is shown
. Details of the front

Crypto Card Slot
Secure communications using the STE requires the use of a PCMCIA based Crypto Card. There are
numerous versions of the BFF and EFF FORTEZZA PLUS
KRYPTON™
ENHANCED CRYPTOCARD
presently in use: the older BFF cards are the KOV-14; the KOV-15; and the SOV-16. The newer EFF
cards are the KOV-14L and the KSV-21. Insert your card into the
CRYPTO CARD SLOT
on the front of
the STE and firmly push, until you have fully seated the card. When seated, the
CARD INSERTED
indicator, located on the front panel, will flash for .5 seconds, and then become a solid light.
NOTE
Ensure you load the Crypto Card properly: with the images of the key and of the
arrow facing up, and with the arrow facing into the STE. Failure to properly load
the card can damage the card and the STE. This damage is not covered by the
warranty.
3-1.2
Crypto Card Ejector Button
The
CRYPTO CARD EJECTOR
button located to the right of the
CRYPTO CARD SLOT
. When the
crypto card is removed, the
CARD INSERTED
indicator goes out.
To remove the card, place your hand in a position to catch the card (especially if the STE is vertically or
wall mounted) and apply firm constant pressure to the ejector button.
3-1.3 Front
Panel
The Office and Tactical STEs are equipped with a Front Panel (Figure 3-2) that provides the
alphanumeric display, control keys and indicators, and the dial pad for the STE. Programming of the STE
