NOTE 

The completion of a download operation does not exit the STE Toolset Program.  

The program simply resets and is available for the next operation.  If the program 

is ended and restarted, the override options return to the default settings. 

10-2.1.4.1.5  Initiate Software Download 

The button does not apply to the Office or Tactical STEs.  When a software download is initiated from the 
STE Virtual Front Panel tool for a CEU, Data STE, STE-R, STE-RI, or STE-RT, the Software Download 
Tool is automatically started.  If, for any reason, a Manual start of the Software Download Tool is desired, 
it can be accomplished by selecting this button.

STE Toolset Help 

The third item in the menu bar is “Help”.  Select 

HELP

 to view the STE Toolset Program “About” menu 

items. You will also use the Help to view and set various options of the STE Toolset Program. 

10-2.1.4.2.1 About 

The “About” menu item displays a standard Windows About form that provides STE Toolset Program 
information. 

10-2.2 

STE Virtual Front Panel Tool 

Since the CEU, Data STE, STE-R, STE-RI, and STE-RT do not have a physical front panel like the 
Office/Tactical STE, it is necessary to use the STE Virtual Front Panel tool (Paragraph

 3-2.2

) to perform 

such tasks as initial configuration, crypto card association, software download initiation, and transitioning 
into and out of the Remote Control mode. 
The STE Virtual Front Panel tool is the default window when the CEU, Data STE, STE-R, STE-RI, or  
STE-RT terminal type is selected from the Options menu. See 

Figure 10-3

 for an illustration of the STE

When the STE-R has “STE-R Local Mode” enabled by the TPA, the STE becomes a remotely controlled 
secure phone which can be physically located away from the user, which you can use as required in 
aircraft or any other non-office situations. As the STE already has a remote control mode using the red 
data port and AT commands, the new feature is called STE-R Local Mode Control, or Local Mode at a 
Distance. 
With this enhancement, the STE Toolset software supports your use of your mouse and keyboard to take 
your STE-R off-hook, to select secure data, non-secure voice, or secure voice, to dial the far-end 
terminal, and to pass your audio to any end-users associated with your STE. 
In order to use the STE Virtual Front Panel tool, the computer’s COMM Port must be connected to the 
CEU, Data STE, STE-R, STE-RI, or STE-RT Console Port and the data rate must be set to 19,200 bps.  It 
should be noted that both the STE Virtual Front Panel tool and the Software Download Tool use the 
Console Port.  The 

RED SERIAL DATA PORT 1

 is not used for Software Download. 

It is not possible to use the STE Virtual Front Panel tool to initiate a normal call since all of the buttons 
used to initiate a call are blocked at the STE.  Since Rekey is initiated via menu selection, a Rekey call 
can be initiated by the STE Virtual Front Panel tool.
