2-7.3.4 Set INITIATE STU MODEM SIGNALING
This feature provides the interoperability with existing STU-III terminals as well as with other STEs in the
STU-III mode. Secure voice is provided utilizing 2.4 kbps LPC-10e and 4.8 kbps CELP. Secure data is
also provided at data rates of 2.4, 4.8 and 9.6 kbps, for both synchronous and asynchronous operation.
The modem in the STU-III mode of operation (STU-III V.32 and V.26) is deployed in these secure voice
and data modes at rates up to 9.6 kbps.
The INITIATE STU MODEM SIGNALING menu (
) shows whether the feature is ENABLED or
DISABLED. The default setting is “ENABLED”.

Connect TRI-TAC Port
The TRI-TAC PORT is located on the rear panel of the Tactical STE Wedge (
If a STE Sleeve is being used, refer to
Paragraph
and the instruction sheet provided with the sleeve in
lieu of Steps 1 and 2 below. For all other installations:
1. If the STE is equipped with a Molex connector on the Rear Panel:
a. Locate the MOLEX cable, part number 430450402, and plug on end of the cable into the
TRI-TAC PORT (4-pin MOLEX 430250400 connector).
b. Plug the other end of this cable into the facility provided TRI-TAC equipment.
2. If the STE is equipped with the four spring-loaded posts, connect the facility provided wires.
When connected, proceed to Paragraph 2-11 and make a test call.

Pre-installation Requirements
The BDI pre-installation requirements apply only to the Tactical STE and to the STE-RT.

BDI PORT
, a DB-25 connector, is located on the rear of the Tactical Wedges. Make sure the mating
serial connector is wired as shown in
The STE supports vocoded plain and encrypted voice (LPC @ 2400 and CELP @ 4800 bps) and
synchronous and asynchronous encrypted data communications (2400, 4800, 9600 bps) via the black
serial data port at the rear of the Tactical Wedges. The port can be configured for as either EIA-530A or
