Windows 2003 Server Installation issue using certain
USB floppy drives to load mass storage drivers (F6
option during install)
Problem: Windows 2003 Server install on an NSN2U Server loads the mass-storage driver from
a USB floppy but then loses the floppy drive shortly after the hard-disk has been partitioned.
Solution: The Windows install media does not have the information necessary to properly load
and setup the USB floppy device. The missing setup info can be added to the Mass Storage
Driver disk by following the steps below:
1.
Insert the USB floppy drive into an already installed Windows system.
2.
In Device Manager, expand “Floppy Disk Drivers” and right-click “Properties”. Go to the “Details”
tab and select “Device Instance Id”. Note the instance ID on the end of the setting. Example:
USBSTOR\SFLOPPY&VEN_SONY&PROD_USB-FDU&REV_6.01\6&2184BD97&0 . The instance ID
would be: 2184BD97
3.
Go to a Command Prompt and start the Registry Editor with: regedit
4.
Do a “Edit/Find” of the Instance ID. It will be found in several places. The one we want is shown
in the screen image below. The Instance Id will be found in “ParentIdPrefix” and the data we
need will be in “HardwareID”:
5.
In “HardwareID” (like in the above screen image), copy the text in the area of the above circle.
