System description
The Kongsberg Mesotech Flexview is a compact, versatile multibeam sonar.
The Flexview is designed for small observation-class
ROVs where compact size and light weight are key
selection criteria. Flexible and efficient, it is suitable
for applications such as site inspection, clearance,
marine engineering, underwater science, environmental
monitoring, or search-and-rescue assignments.
The removable transducer on the Flexview is the first of its
kind, offering field replacement of a damaged transducer
in the unlikely event of a catastrophic impact. This
innovative design also allows for transducer configurations
to be exchanged, depending on the job being performed.
For example, a low-frequency transducer can detect objects at a long range, whereas a
high-frequency transducer provides high-resolution images at short range.
Multibeam sonars have an array of transducers that simultaneously transmits pings (sound
pulses) at a specified frequency to cover a large area in less time than a single-beam
transducer. To generate data, computer software assigns a colour range corresponding to
the amount of sound reflected off a target. The distance to the target is determined by the
length of time it took to receive the transmitted acoustic pulse.
The Flexview provides wide-angle full-range situational
awareness and concurrent ultra-short range imaging with
dynamic focusing.
By combining the high refresh rate of a conventional
multibeam sonar with an image quality comparable to a
single-beam sonar, the Flexview provides high-resolution
images that are easy to interpret. The Flexview has a
140° field of view, allowing you to see the full underwater
picture in real-time.
