IV Overvoltage category KJM6310

F or the safe use of equipment, IEC60664 (Insulation coordi-
nation for equipment within low-voltage systems) classi fi es
circuits into four categories by an occurrence level of tran-
sient voltage. When you connect equipment to a power line
or connect a measuring instrument to these places, make
sure of the applied overvoltage category. This instrument is
designed to operate from the overvoltage category II.
Overvoltage category I
• Equipment of o v erv oltage cate gory I is equipment for connec -
tion to circuits in which measures are tak en to limit transient
o v erv oltages to an appropriately lo w le v el.
Examples are protected electronic circuits.
Ov er v oltage categor y II
• Equipment of o v erv oltage cate gory II is ener gy-consuming
equipment to be supplied from the fi x ed installation.
Examples of such equipment are appliances, portable tools and
other household and similar loads.
If such equipment is subjected to special requirements with
re g ard to reliability and a v ailability , o v erv oltage cate gory III
applies.

• Equipment of o v erv oltage cate gory III is equipment in fi x ed
installations and for cases where the reliability and the a v ail -
ability of the equipment is subject to special requirements.
Examples of such equipment are switches in the fi x ed installa -
tion and equipment for industrial use with permanent connec -
tion to the fi x ed installation.

• Equipment of o v erv oltage IV is for use at the origin of the
installation.
Example of such equipment are electricity meters and primary
o vercurrent protection equipment.
