Power Connections
The CA8WL-AL can be powered via the following sources:
Ethernet connector using PoE (Class 0)
TB6 with a +12V DC, UL approved, power supply
Keyscan recommends the CA8WL-AL power is supplemented with an appropriate backup battery ensuring
continued operation in the event of a power failure.
PoE
The CA8WL-AL has a built-in PoE power supply with the following maximum current rating:
680mA @ 12V (approximately 8 Watts)
The CA8WL-AL’s on-board PoE power supply has sufficient capacity to power the CA8WL-AL (200 mA) and the
PIM400-485 (250 mA) which is within the 680 mA threshold. Refer to Figure 12 - Communication – Network
with PoE (Ethernet) on page 25 for connections.
Note
The CA8WL-AL operates as a Class 0 PoE Powered Device (PD). As such, the CA8WL-AL requires the
allocation of 15.4 Watts from the PoE switch or injector. Of the 15.4 Watts, the CA8WL-AL provides
680mA at 12 volts - approximately 8 Watts.
12V DC Power Supply
If using serial, serial/USB, or non-PoE network communication, refer to Figure 13 – Power Supply on page 28
for the CA8WL-AL. The PIM400-485 may be connected from the CA8WL-AL’s Power – out terminals or directly
off the power supply. If connecting the PIM400-485 directly from the power supply, refer to the Schlage
PIM400-485 User Guide. Ensure that you also review the appropriate communication diagrams.
System Power-up
Depending how the CA8WL-AL is connected for power – PoE (Class 0) or a +12V DC separate supply – refer to
the relevant power up instructions.
Important
After the control board has been powered up for the first time, be sure to reset the factory defaults by
performing a clear memory procedure outlined on page 18. After the control board has been installed,
powered and tested, return to a Server/workstation with the Keyscan Client software and perform a full
panel upload to populate the control board with the Keyscan database.
PoE
Ensure the right cover on the CA8WL-AL control board has been removed.
Connect the Ethernet cable from the PoE power source – the network switch or the injector – into the
Ethernet terminal on the CA8WL-AL control board.
