12.10.2 Tipping backwards by the user

Release the brakes.

Roll backwards a short distance, grasp both handrims firmly and push
forwards with a slight kick.

The shift in weight and steering in opposite directions ith the handrims will
enable you to keep the balance.
12.10.3 Tipping backwards by the attendant

Release the brakes.
②
Grasp both push handles firmly and put one of your feet on the relevant
tipping lever at the back of the chair.

Inform the person in the chair that you are going to tilt the chair backwards.

Pull backwards with both hands and push down with the foot. This will
bring the center of gravity of chair into the rear wheels.
Never apply the parking brakes too suddenly or when the chair is not
stationary as this may tip the user out of the chair.
● This method should only be applied by experienced wheelchair users. It
is always better to have the help of an attendant.
● To prevent the wheelchair tipping backwards, it’s better to install anti-
tippers.
