The recording mode is the setting for the
compression level when recording images. The
image quality and recording time are related.

DV mode
Supports only HDD recording. Records in the same
format as a DV camcorder.
XP/SP mode
Recommended for recording sports programmes and
other fast-action programmes.
LP mode
Recommended for recording dramas and other slow-
action programmes with little contrast.
EP/FR480 mode
Recommended when there is no spare recordable time
(disc remaining time), or for programmes with clear
outlines like in animations.
FR (Free Rate) Mode

The numbers of the FR mode represent the recordable
time (in minutes, estimated) in a DVD disc.

FR60 - FR360 can be set by 5-minute intervals, then
follow by FR420 and FR480. FR60 is almost
equivalent to XP in terms of image quality; the same
goes for FR120 to SP, FR240 to LP, and FR360 to EP.

It may not be possible to play back discs recorded in
FR420 or FR480 mode on other units.
