Maintenance /dismantling:
Always disconnect the plug from the mains before carrying out any work on the appli-
ance!
Deposits (dirt, limescale etc.) on the quartz insert glass inside the appliance prevent the
appliance operating as efficiently as possible. Therefore the appliance should be cleaned
inside about twice a year (more frequently if performance significantly deteriorates). The
special UV-C lamp should be exchanged once a year or after approx. 6000 operating hours.
Procedure:
1. Loosen the hoses and let the water run out of the appliance.
2. Open the clamp holders (6) and carefully remove the appliance.
3. Unscrew the casing lid (3) with the lamp (5) and replace the lamp, if necessary. In the
case of the 18 and 36 W models, take care not to lose the rubber bearing (5 A) for the
end of the lamp and check that it is put back correctly in place on the new lamp. Mod-
els 18 and 36 W come with a conventional starter for fluorescent tubes which should
be replaced after 2 tube changes. The Starter is under the round cover on the side
between the tube holder and the housing lid. Unscrew the Phillips screw, remove the
cover and replace the starter. Only the following starters fit: Philips Ecoclick S10.
4. Carefully remove the quartz insert (2) with the holder. To do so, place a coin or similar
object in one of the slits visible on the end of the casing thread and carefully lever off. A
screwdriver with a broad blade is also suitable.
5. Carefully clean the casing (1) and quartz glass insert (2) with water and a soft cloth.
Limescale deposits can be easily removed after soaking for a short time in JBL Clean A.
6. Re-assemble in reverse order. Check that the O-rings (1 A and 2 A) fit correctly and, in
the 18 and 36 W models, the rubber bearer for the quartz glass insert (1 B). Grease the
O-rings with a little Vaseline if required.
Important note on duration of use:
If medication is used in the aquarium, the UV-C appliance should be switched off for the
duration of the treatment, as otherwise the medication may be broken down into ineffec-
tive ingredients.
The effectiveness of modern fertiliser preparations, vitamins etc. in a freshwater aquarium
may also be influenced by the use of UV-C water clarifiers. Therefore the permanent use of
UV-C water clarifiers in freshwater is generally not recommended. In individual cases, the
decision has to be based on priorities.
However, permanent use is preferable in saltwater aquariums and garden ponds.
