MegaRAID Controller Battery Backup Module

This document describes how to install a battery backup module on a MegaRAID controller board.
The battery backup module is a card that connects to the top of the MegaRAID controller board and
provides emergency battery power for cache memory.  A battery pack mounted on the battery backup
module preserves data in cache memory for up to 72 hours.  A new battery pack should be installed
every one to five years.  MegaRAID software informs the user when the battery pack should be
replaced.  You will need to see the documentation delivered with the system to open the system base
unit and gain access to the MegaRAID controller.

The MEGAMGR utility is included on a bootable diskette with the battery backup module.  This
document tells you how to start the utility at the MS-DOS prompt and perform the steps to configure
the battery backup module.  Any time a battery backup module is installed or replaced, you must run
this utility and reset the battery charge counter.

Battery Precautions

WARNING

There is a danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly replaced.  Intergraph recommends
replacing the entire battery backup module.

The material in the battery contains heavy metals that can contaminate the environment.  Federal, state,
and local regulations prohibit the disposal of some rechargeable batteries in public landfills.  Disposal
of the used battery pack should be in accordance to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Getting Started

Unpack the shipping box and verify that you have the following items:

One battery backup module with a four-cell, nickel hydride battery pack

Two large screws and one small screw

One standoff and two washers

One metal clip

Wrist strap

If an item is missing or damaged, notify the Intergraph Customer Response Center at
1-800-633-7248.

To prepare for the installation:

1.  Shut down the operating system and turn off system power.

2.  Disconnect the power cable from the system base unit.

3.  Open the system base unit to gain access to the MegaRAID controller.  See the documentation

delivered with the system for details.

4.  Remove the antistatic wrist strap from its envelope.  Unfold the wrist strap and wrap the exposed

adhesive side firmly around your bare wrist.

5.  Peel the liner from the wrist strap copper foil; then attach the adhesive side of the copper foil to a

bare metal surface (electrical ground) inside the system base unit.
