There are two scanning modes, or
Scan Type:
selections. The
SOFIA 565 can scan the band and display only the
RSSI
level,
which is the fastest scan, or it can scan and display both the
RSSI + RDS
information, which takes a bit longer.
Here is an FM-band plot of the Los Angeles market scanned in
the
RSSI + RDS
mode. For this plot,
Center Frequency (MHz):
was set to
98.1
, with a
Step Size:
of
200kHz
. This puts FM sta-
tion frequencies in the center of the screen. Alternatively, leav-
ing
Center Frequency (MHz):
at the default value of
87.9
would
skew this image to the right-hand margin and show activity
down to 67.9MHz. A setting of 107.9 would skew it to the left,
completely eliminating the display of frequencies below the
present FM band.
FM carriers are displayed as vertical bars, the height indicating
the relative signal strength in dBµV per the annotation to the
left of the plot. Had this scan been done in the simple
RSSI:
mode, all stations would show up just as yellow bars.
By ‘hovering’ over a yellow bar, the
Freq:
and
RSSI:
level are shown numerically in the pop-up
per the first example on the right. Click on the
bar and the radio will tune to that station and
bring up the
Now Playing
page.
A yellow bar with a red dot indicates that the sta-
tion carries RDS information. (The red dot shows
only when the
Scan Type:
is set to
RSSI + RDS
.)
Hovering over the red dot will show
Freq:
and
RSSI:
, plus the RDS
PI:
code and
Call:
letters (in
the US and Canada), and the
PTY
, or program-
ming format of the station as shown in the sec-
ond example on the right.
Market stations that carry RDS data are shown as
RDS Stations:
in the list directly below the scan. These are listed in ascending
frequency along with their PI, callsign, PTY and RSSI values.
Click on any station’s frequency to immediately tune the SOFIA
565 to that station and be taken to the
Now Playing
Web inter-
face page.
