E.1 Introduction
E.1.1 RAID Support
The SiS964 southbridge chipset integrated controller supports the following three SATA
RAID levels:
JBOD
RAID0
RAID1
E.1.2 What is RAID
RAID, or redundant array of inexpensive disks, is a method of saving data on multiple
disks so that if one of the disks is damaged or destroyed, the data on the disks is not lost.
Only the three RAID levels listed above can be implemented on your system
JBOD stands for Just a Bunch Of Disks. This is not a RAID level. If any thing
happens to one hard drive, all the information on that drive is lost.
RAID0 refers to disk striping. Data is distributed (striped) over multiple disks.
This increases the overall disk performance but the data is not redundantly
stored and therefore any damage to the system disks will result in a loss of
information.
RAID1 refers to disk mirroring. The information on one disk is completely
mirrored onto a second disk. The effective storage capacity of the hard disks
is halved but the data on the disks is safe. If one of the disks is destroyed or
damaged in any way the information on that disk is retrievable from the
second disk.
E.2 RAID Setup
E.2.1 Introduction
To setup the RAID, the following procedures must be completed.
Step 4:
Step 5:
Two SATA drives must be installed onto the system.
The RAID BIOS must be configured.
