The HSS Fall Arrest Blocks are divided in the three
product groups.
G Savers – These are used to provide fall arrest for
personnel and also provided a retrieval system.
G Stops – Are used to provide fall arrest for personnel.
G Guard – Used for providing fall arrest for materials.
It is important that the correct product is used for
your job. Never connect personnel to a G Guard and
never connect materials to either a G Saver or G Stop.
PRODUCT SELECTION
The following pointers are for additional guidance
and are not the only checks to be made in the
assessment.
If in any doubt consult a fully qualified
health and safety officer.
This equipment must only be used within its
design limits. The anchor design on both G Saver
and G Stop is for one man only to a maximum load
of 136kg.
Only after carrying out a full risk assessment and
confirming that the equipment is suitable and safe
for the task should you use it.
Always make sure that a disaster and rescue plan
forms part of your assessment.
RISK ASSESSMENT
GETTING STARTED
G STOP & G SAVER should be suspended from a
suitable suspension point above the user, above head
height is preferable.
(Except when used in conjunction
with a suitable CE approved roof man anchor having
considered the path of the rope should a fall occur).
Always make sure that the block is securely attached
to the anchor point.
Having satisfied yourself that this is done
, pull the wire
rope end out of the unit.
Connect the hook to a suitable
anchor point on your full body harness.
Harnesses are
available, for sale, from your local HSS Safe & Sure.
Always check that the hook is correctly attached to
the harness and that its safety catch is fully closed.
G GUARD provides fall arrest protection for materials.
Connect the G Guard to a suitable anchor point.
Always
make sure that this anchor point is above the load,
which the guard will be protecting.
Connect the shackle to the load. If it is not possible to
connect the shackle direct to the load, additional slings
may be required
. These are available from your local HSS.
Never work alone. Always have a colleague close that
is well practiced in recovery and is fully aware of the
disaster and recovery plan.
Never attach to a lanyard, always connect direct to
the harness.
Always ensure that the items you are using are in
good condition. If you are wearing a harness,
have a colleague check that it is fitted correctly.
When working with any fall arrest product, do not
take unnecessary risks. Do not have a false sense
of security. THE FALL ARREST BLOCK IS THERE AS
A LAST RESORT.
Take your time and do not over do it.
You are more
likely to make a mistake or have an accident if you are
tired or rushing the job.
G Stops and G Savers –
Once you are attached securely
you can begin work.
The fall arrest block will
automatically pay out rope as you move away from the unit
and retract rope in when you move closer too it, similar to
a car seat belt.
The rope should never become slack. If
the unit does not payout and retract the rope
smoothly thus, not keeping a reasonable tension at
all time times – STOP WORK
. Return the unit to your
local HSS Safe & Sure for a replacement.
Keep a direct straight line between yourself and
the fall arrest block. Never allow the rope to go
around corners etc.
