NOTE:
This chapter only applies for firmware which supports VPN function.
8.1
VPN OVERVIEW
This section describes some of the concepts related to the
VPN
screens.
A virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network,
such as the Internet. It enables a computer to send and receive data across shared or
public networks as if it were directly connected to the private network, while
benefitting from the functionality, security and management policies of the private
network. This is done by establishing a virtual point-to-point connection through the
use of dedicated connections, encryption, or a combination of the two.
8.1.1
IPSEC
The Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) is a technology protocol suite for securing IP
communications by authenticating and/or encrypting each IP packet of a
communication session.
8.1.1.1
FRAMEWORK PROTOCOLS
There are two main IPsec framework protocols are as follows:
ESP
Encapsulated Security Payload (ESP) is a protocol protects the IP packet data from
third party interference by encrypting the contents using symmetric cryptography
algorithms.
AH
Authentication Header (AH) is a protocol protects the IP packet header from third
party interference and spoofing by computing a cryptographic checksum and hashing
the IP packet header fields with a secure hashing function. This is then followed by an
additional header that contains the hash, to allow the information in the packet to be
authenticated.
