Data interface connections
Notice
This product contains components that can be damaged by
electrostatic
discharge (ESD)
. Observe precautions for handling ESD sensitive devices and
never touch connector pins unless properly grounded.
Connecting an encoder
This product can be used with HEIDENHAIN linear, and rotary encoders that provide
sinusoidal output (11 µA
PP
or 1V
PP
) signals or EnDat (
En
coder

a). The connecting cable
must not exceed 30 meters in length.
To connect an encoder:

Verify that the power switch is in the off position.

Connect the axis encoder tightly to it’s connector. An input designator is provided near
each connector located on the rear of the product.
Connecting an RS-232-C cable
The RS-232-C port is used for bi-directional communication with a computer. A cross-
over cable must be used. Refer to the
POSITIP 880 Operating Instructions
for more
information on RS-232-C communications.
To connect an RS-232-C cable:

Verify that the power switch is in the off position.

Connect a computer’s RS-232-C port to the POSITIP 880 RS-232-C port (X31) located
on the rear of the product. Use the HEIDENHAIN cable ID 366964-xx.
Connecting the IOB 89
The IOB provides digital inputs and outputs.
To connect the IOB 89:

Verify that the power switch is in the off position.

X
Connect the IOB 89 using the connecting cable to the POSITIP 880 using X51. Use the
HEIDENHAIN cable ID 532856-xx. See Accessories section for more details.
Parallel port
The parallel port allows printing to a printer that supports Centronics interface. Refer to the
POSITIP 880 Operating Instructions for more information on the parallel port X32.
To connect a printer cable:

Verify that the power switch is in the off position.

Connect a printer cable to the POSITIP 880 X32 located on the rear of the product.
Connecting the KT 130 Edge Finder
The KT 130 Edge Finder is used for probing functions.
To connect the KT 130 Edge Finder:

Verify that the power switch is in the off position.

X
Connect the KT 130 Edge Finder directly to the POSITIP 880 using X10 located on the
rear of the product. See Accessories section for more details.
