Using the Digital Welding Gauge
Measuring Undercut
1.
Undercuts are grooves which form at one or both sides of a weld joint. They
are usually caused by moving the welding rod too quickly, or too high current
being used during welding. Undercut is considered a welding defect.
2.
It is difficult to measure undercut because of the small size of the defect.
Place the Reference Points and the tip of the 60º template on the material
surface. Press the ON button, and press the ZERO button.
3.
Place the Reference Point on the material surface, and press the 60º template
into the template. The depth of the undercut will be displayed on the readout.
Measuring Fillets and Excess Material
1.
Place one of the Reference Points and the tip of the 60º template on the
material surface. Press the ON button, and press the ZERO button.
2.
If the weld is on a flat surface, place both of the Reference Points on the
material surface on both sides of the weld. Adjust the 60º template until the
tip is touching the top surface of the weld. The digital readout will display the
height of the weld.
3.
If the weld is a fillet in an angle, place the Reference Points and the tip of the
60º template on the material surface. Press the ON button, and press the
ZERO button. Place one of the Reference Points on top of the weld. Adjust
the 60º template until the tip is touching the top surface of the work material.
The digital readout will display the height of the weld.
4.
Excess material is any weld material beyond that called for by the blueprint
or appropriate welding standard.
Checking Preparation Angle and Misalignment.
1.
Place any of the Templates in the groove prepared for the weld. Try various
Templates until the one most closely matching the groove angle is found. This
will tell you the approximate angle of the prepared weld groove.
2.
Misalignment can be found by placing the appropriate Template in the weld
groove. If the adjoining work material pieces are misaligned, it will be apparent
when compared to the Template.
