Activate Sharing
If you want share files and/or printers on other computers in the network, click File and Printer
Sharing: Here you can activate file and/or printer sharing for your PC if that has not yet been
done. Afterwards click

OK. You can now share folders, drives and printers.
Specify Computer Name and Workgroup
Click

Identification. Select a different computer name for each PC. The workgroup must be
same for each PC in the network. The workgroup name may not be the same as a computer
name. Afterwards click

OK. All basic settings are now made. When prompted to do so, place
the Windows CD in the drive and click OK. (you may need to enter the letter assigned to your
CD-ROM drive). Answer “Yes” when prompted for a restart.
Share Folders, Drives or Printers:
Right-click the folder, drive or printer in Windows Explorer. Click

Share. Now select “Share
as:” and then enter the share name (change the access type,
³
necessary)

Accept

OK.
A hand symbol on the icon indicates a shared resource in Windows Explorer.
Access to Shared Folders and Drives:
Click Network Neighborhood in Window Explorer or on the Desktop. Now select the shared
resources you want to access.
Set Up Shared Printer:
Click Start

Search.
Select the PC the printer is connected to and then click the corresponding Printer

“Print Documents with applications for MS-DOS?”, select yes or no depending on your needs

The Hardware Wizard starts after the ethernet adapter is connected to the USB port. Insert the
included driver disk. In the “What do you want Windows to do?” screen, select “Search for the
best driver for your device” and then click

Finish. Remove the disk from the drive and
answer

Yes when prompted for a restart.
Driver Installation on Windows 98SE:
After you have connected the network adapter to the USB port, the Found New Hardware dialog
appears. The adapter is identified as a “USB 2.0 Device”. The Hardware Assistant then opens
and searches for new drivers for the “USB 2.0 Device”. Click

Next. In the next dialog (What do
you want Windows to do?), select “Search for the best driver for your device”
³
Next. Insert the
enclosed driver disk. Select only “Disk Drives”
³
Next

Next. The necessary files will now be
copied from the disk.
If an “Insert Disk” window appears, click

OK and enter “A:\“

OK.
When prompted to do so, place the Windows 98 CD in the drive and click OK (you may need to
enter the letter assigned to your CD-ROM drive).

Basic Configuration of a New Network (Windows 98SE/ME)
After you have successfully installed the network adapter, you still have to install or configure a
protocol. This protocol governs the data exchange between the computer and the network.
TCP/IP is used most often. Most of the recent, network-capable games used this protocol as
well. Each computer has to be assigned its own address for the protocol. Automatic address
assignment is only reliable if a DHCP server exists in the network. This is not normally the case.
It is recommended that you assign an address to the adapter itself. The following example
describes basic setup using manual address assignment. For local networks, special address
ranges are provided which are not transmitted over the internet. As an example, a range that you
can use for your network is 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254. The first PC receives the address
192.168.1.1, the second 192.168.1.2, the third 192.168.1.3, etc.

Network. Check whether the entry "TCP/IP -> ASIX
AX88172 USB2 to Fast Ethernet Adapter" appears in the new dialog. If no additional network
device is installed besides the new network adapter, the entry is “TCP/IP”. If this entry does not

OK. Afterwards, assign an IP address to the adapter. Select "TCP/IP -> ASIX

Set IP Address.
For the “IP Address”, enter a number according to the above example (i.e. 192.168.1.1 for the 1st
PC and 192.168.1.2 for the 2nd PC, etc). Enter 255.255.255.0 for the Subnet Mask. Now confirm
your entries with

OK.
Install Client for Microsoft Networks
In order to access files and/or printers on other PCs, the “Client for Microsoft Networks” must
be installed. If the client is not in the list of network components, add it as follows: Click

Add. Now click Microsoft in the left window (manufacturer). In the right window
(network clients), click Client for Microsoft Networks

OK.
You also have to define which Windows Login appears when you start the computer.
Select “Client for Microsoft Networks” under Primary Network Login.
