It is important to read all of the safety precautions, installation and wiring instructions in this
document before the GS2440EX sensor and associated equipment is installed. It is important for the
safety of the user that the installation instructions from the manufacturer are obeyed. If the applicable
safety precautions are not obeyed, or if the equipment is not installed correctly, there is a dangerous
potential for an explosion. Only qualified personnel must supply supervision in all hazardous location
installations.
The CAx440EX field transmitter is made for use in explosion hazardous areas and can be used as
an Ex-barrier module for the GS2440EX sensor. The field transmitter is a power supply and a radio
communication device. The field transmitter supplies power to the GS2440EX sensor and transmits
data from the GS2440EX sensor to the Hach H
2
S Data cloud server. It is important to read the
CAx440EX Field Transmitter Hazardous Location Safety Precautions
document before the
installation.
4.1.1 Safety guidelines for hazardous locations
W A R N I N G
Warning:
Disassembly of this device is not allowed.
4.1.2 Intrinsically safe installation requirements
Installation of this equipment must obey local electrical code requirements as shown in the
hazardous location control drawings. Installation is subject to final approval by the authority that has
jurisdiction.
Specific conditions of use:
• The sensor has been considered an isolated metal part and has a max capacitance of 97.2 pF on
the screws of the enclosure body. The end user shall ensure that this part is incapable of being
charged, either through grounding or installation conditions. Please refer to the installation manual
for details on the mitigation of electrostatic charging.
• The sensor must not be disassembled.
• It is the end user's responsibility to select proper barriers for the sensor.
4.1.3 Hazardous location control drawing
D A N G E R
Explosion hazard. Never connect items to the sensor that are not specified on the control drawing.
Do not connect or disconnect any equipment unless power has been switched off or the area is
known to be non-hazardous.
Follow the control drawing provided and all codes and regulations for connection to the sensor in the
hazardous location. Refer to
Approved GS2440EX installation drawing
on page 9 for the control
drawing.
4.2 Installation guidelines
• Keep the sensor away from direct sunlight, heat sources, corrosive chemicals or gases (all but
H
2
S), mechanical impacts, abrasive materials, vibrations, shocks, dust and radioactive emissions.
• Do not use the field transmitter outside the specified electrical, mechanical, and thermal
parameters, or outside the measurement range. Refer to
Specifications
in the field transmitter user
instructions.
• If the sensor will be installed in water (or if an increase in the water level could put the sensor in
water), attach the cable guard to the sensor. Refer to the
GS1440, GS2440EX H
2
S Sensor User
Manual
