Rotating bezel
The aluminium pilot bezel of a Guinand watch can be rotated in
both directions. Pilots who operate aircraft under Visual Flight
Rules can use the additional minute scale as a navigation aid:
on take-off the minute hand is set with the flyback function
(permanent zero setting) so that the bezel counts the flight
minutes. If, for example, the planned route includes certain
landmarks after 15 minutes of change of direction, you can
watch on the bezel when it is time to keep a lookout for the
respective landmark. A chronograph cannot effectively perform
this function as the mostly small minute totaliser is much harder
to read than the central hand of a pilot watch. This stopwatch
function of up to 60 minutes also makes sense for non-aviation
applications, and two things can be timed parallel to each other
with the use of the chronograph mechanism.
