SPARGE WATER
HEATER
SPARGE WATER
HEATER
Designed for USE WITH the Grainfather
Safety Cutout
This sparge water heater features a
boil-dry switch which will automatically
switch the unit off if the water level is
too low or empty. To reset this, switch
off, unplug the urn and allow it to cool.
Empty any remaining water and press
the ‘reset’ switch located underneath.
Refill the urn and operate as normal.
If you are using this unit with the
Grainfather, do not plug it into the
same power supply.
Sparging is an important part of the brewing process. After mashing, liquid malt is trapped
in the grains and needs to be removed with as little disturbance to the filtering action of
the grain bed as possible. With the upper screen in place on the Grainfather the sparge
water can be poured over the plate and it will be diffused gently throughout the grain bed.
Excessive sparging can cause tannins to be released from the grains and can also lower the
alcohol percentage of the beer. Use the calculations in the Grainfather instructions to
determine the correct volume of sparge water.
CLEANING
Remove and unpack unit. It is recommended that you clean your sparge water heater
before the first use. Add 15 L (3.96 US Gal) of water and 2 Tbsp of Grainfather High
Performance Cleaner. Heat to 55°C (131°F) use a soft bristle brush to scrub all inside
surfaces to remove manufacturing oils then rinse with clean water before use.

Operation
1. Turn the lid anti clockwise to open.
2. Fill the sparge water heater with tap water. Make sure the water is filled to below the “Max”
level indicator.
3. Replace the lid and turn clockwise to lock into place.
4. Plug the unit into power socket.
5. Locate the “On/Off” switch and switch to “On”. The pilot lamp will light up and the water will
start heating.
6. Set the required temperature on the thermostat dial.
7. The pilot lamp will light up the heating light until it reaches its input temperature, then
it will switch to the ‘keep warm’ light. This will keep the water at the required input temperature.
NOTE: The thermostat has a switch off temperature and a reheat temperature. The switch off
temperature is accurate to ± 5°C. So it is important to have thermometer to check the
temperature to make sure the water is at 75°C (167°F) and mark that area on the thermostat
for future reference.
8. Use the tap to dispense the water.
9. Always make sure approx 3 cups water remains in the urn to prevent a boil dry.
