Chapter 4: performance
Reverse the shift mechanism to stop a boat that is moving forward. This change in direction will
provide a “braking action” and slow the boat.
C A U T I O N
The braking action causes a wake which may wash over the transom and flood the boat if the
vessel is moving too fast. Allow engine RPMs to decrease before shifting into reverse. Also,
under certain conditions, not allowing the RPMs to reduce before shifting to reverse may cause
the engine(s) to shut down.
The throttle/shift control system requires regular preventative maintenance for continued safe
and reliable operation. Refer to the engine manual for specific recommendation and maintenance
requirements. All inspections, repairs, and replacements to the throttle/shift controls should be
performed only by a qualified marine technician.
Consult your engine manual for more information regarding the Yamaha electronic system.
