A Note About Place Names
Many of the place names found on your globe can be pronounced in
several ways. Often the way people living in a place say the name of their
city or country is quite different from the way outsiders
pronounce it. One example is the city of
Moscow, Russia, which the local residents
pronounce Moskva. When faced with a
choice about which pronunciation to
use for place names, we have
generally chosen the ones most
frequently used by native English
speakers. If you would like to learn
more about the local pronunciations
of worldwide place names, please
check the reference section of your
local library for atlases printed in
foreign languages.
