Distributed Port-Based VLANs
A network of ETHER-1000 units supports up to 60 distributed port-based VLANs
(“D-PVLANs”). Using VistaNET, the user can assign membership in any one
D-PVLAN to each of the 8 ports on the paddleboard. Ports provisioned as
D-PVLAN trunks can have multiple D-PVLAN memberships (explained later).
In the example shown in Figure 4, the LAN segments A, C1, D, E2 and F1 are on
the same D-PVLAN because the respective ETHER-1000 ports are configured
for the same D-PVLAN value (D-PVLAN=1). Similarly, the LAN segments B, C2,
E1 and F2 are on another D-PVLAN (D-PVLAN=2). This ensures that no traffic
from stations in D-PVLAN #1 can reach stations in D-PVLAN #2.
The port-based VLAN feature is implemented without corrupting any ingressing
frames‟ 802.1p or 802.1Q tags, thereby providing the transparent transport of
Ethernet traffic. The D-PVLAN information is encoded in a proprietary secure tag
called
“Envelope Header” attached to each frame at its source ETHER-1000 unit
and removed at the destination one, so the frames leave the ETHER-1000
system unchanged. Optionally, the 802.1Q/p tags can be added or removed at
the destination port if the port is set to do so (see
Output Tagging
below).
