Cleaning your bird feeder

To prevent the spread of infections among garden birds, it is very important to clean your

bird feeder on a regular basis.  Bacteria and fungal spores can develop quickly on bird

feeders, bird tables and in bird baths, so regular cleaning can help prevent this.  Please also

move your bird feeder around the garden to prevent a build up of disease in any one area.

How to clean your bird feeder

1.

Wearing rubber gloves, empty the feeder and dispose of the content in a bin.  Do not

reuse the food or compost it.

2.

Thoroughly clean the feeder with a brush in hot soapy water.  Ensure all residual

food and droppings are removed.

3.

Rinse the feeder with cold water from an outside tap and leave to stand to dry

completely.

4.

Finally, spray the feeder with a veterinary disinfectant, which should kill any

remaining infections.  Rinse the feeder again and allow to dry naturally before

refilling.
