icon so it activates and twinkles, touch the second

square to the RIGHT of the King. The King moves

to that position and the Rook in the RIGHT corner

jumps to the LEFT side of the King to protect it.

(See Fig. 3a)

  lonG-CaSTlInG (Queen-side):  happens when

the King and Rook have never been moved and

are not under threat by the opponent’s piece. Tap

the King icon so it activates and twinkles, touch the

second square to the LEFT of the King.

The King moves to that position and the Rook in the LEFT corner jumps to

the RIGHT side of the King to protect it

(See Fig. 3b)

There are a number of restrictions connected with castling.

  1.  You can only castle once during a game.

  2.  You can castle only when all the squares between the King and the

Rook in question are empty.

  3.  You cannot castle at all if your King has already moved (you cannot

castle even if your King moves back to his original square). Also, you

cannot castle with a Rook that has moved (even if it moves back to its

original position), but you may be able to castle with the other Rook if

it hasn’t moved yet and none of the rules here are violated.

  4.   You cannot castle in reply to a check, but you may be able to castle

after the check is disposed of, but again none of the rules concerning

castling must be broken. Castling is also impossible if it involves

moving the King over or on a square controlled by an enemy piece.

en Passant

Applies only to the capture of a Pawn by a Pawn, in a specific situation.

The two Pawns of opposite colour involved must be on adjacent files.

The Pawn that is to capture en passant must be on its fifth rank, while the

Pawn that is to be captured must be on its (original) second rank.

  1.  When a Pawn makes a double step on its first move and there is an

opponent’s Pawn one step diagonally to the right or left of the Pawns

square, the Pawn must take out the opponents man on the next move.

  2.  Capturing en passant is optional, but if a player wants to capture en

passant, he must do it on the first opportunity. If he declines to make

the capture immediately, the option disappears for good.

Check and Checkmate

The King is said to be in check when he is attacked by any piece. This is

a fundamental law of chess that the King can never be taken.

Whenever

any attack is made upon the King, he must be warned by the cry of check
