The first step in comb-binding is to prepare the machine to accommodate your particular
document format and length:

1 .

Selec t com b si ze a nd m a rgin  d epth .

As shown, place the

document, including covers, against the machine front and slide the
cursor

2

forward until it rests firmly against it. Looking through the

viewer

1

, you can now see both the comb size and margin depth

that you should use. If the document lies between two comb sizes,
choose the larger size. Similarly, if it also lies between two margin
settings, take the higher number, thus deeper margin, in order to do
more to reduce page tearing. To do this, move the margin indicator

3

to the indicated or desired setting. A guide to these sizes and

settings is also printed on the inside of the waste drawer

+

.

2 .

Op en  com b.

Position the comb behind the rake teeth

&

with the

comb opening toward the top. Push the comb firmly down between
the rake teeth

&

and pull the comb lever

*

toward you, releasing it when the comb teeth have uncurled

enough to allow easy insertion of the document. (If pulling the lever

*

does not uncurl the

comb, you need to turn it over. )

3 .

Set com b  br a ke

,

, if  d esir e d

. This can be a great time-saver when you are binding

many documents of the same size. The comb brake

,

allows you to open the remaining

combs exactly as wide as the first simply by pulling the lever

*

until it stops. Once the first

comb is in the desired position, slide the brake toward the back of the machine as far as it
will go. (It’s a good habit to return the brake to its original position when finished so that
the next user does not try to force the lever when opening a larger comb.)

4 .

Adj ust  for  d ocu men t  siz e.

Turn the document wheel

%

until the edge guide

$

is lined

up with the mark corresponding to your document type. If your document is not European
A4, you will also have to release a cutting die in order to punch the right number of holes.
To do this, lift the die cover

4

on the top of the machine, pull up on the die marked with

your format, and close the lid. We recommend you first test the results of your settings with
a sample sheet. If the row of holes is not centered along the document edge, turn the doc-
ument wheel

%

a little in one direction or the other and retest.

Now you are ready to start the actual

bin di n g p ro c e s s

. We have designed this machine to

enable you to perform the key two work steps – punching and sheet insertion – alternately,
instead of first punching the entire document, then inserting it into the comb,
as many machines still require you to do. Although you can of course do it this way, insert-
ing the document “

in  in stal lm en ts

” eliminates the problem of realigning holes and can

therefore save considerable time and trouble when binding a long document. This is how it
works:

P u nc h  fr on t  and b ack  cov er s

following the standard punching procedure (page 4) and

insert the front cover face down into the comb. (The front cover should be first so that the
comb opening is hidden at the back.)

P u nc h  sh eets  in  ba tch es

of no more than 25 (manual) or 30 pages (electric) using the

same procedure and insert them face down into the comb.
