Olli 300, 600, 950 and 1000
For connecting the fence connector push down the red button and push the stripped cable into the connector.
Ensure the connection by pulling the wire lightly. Install the earthing wire to the black connector in the same way and
secure the connection.
In Olli 1000 you can connect the return voltage control to the green connector and earthing testing to the blue
connector in the same way.
If you
can’t install the connection wire directly to the energiser, please use Olli earth cable to connect the fence to
the device. Olli earth cable has a thick insulation that isolates the high voltage that the fence energiser produces.
You can use this cable to take the fence wire through a wall and you can also install it underground if this is
necessary.
Please never use any low voltage cables or ordinary electrical installation cables as these can not to completely
isolate the high voltage pulse that has a voltage of up to 10 000 volts. Any leakages diminish the effect of the
energiser and may cause disturbances in telephones, TV-picture or radio.
5. Earthing
Earthing refers to fence earthing in use. When an animal touches the fence conductor and the ground at the same
time it completes the electric circuit and suffers a shock. Therefore a proper earthing is necessary for the function of
the fence.
Earthing can be done either by using the ground as the electric earth or by using a separate earth wire in the fence.
In traditional earthing the animals gets a shock when it touches the fence wire and the ground at the same time. In
the two wire system the animal gets a shock when it touches the electric wire and the ground wire at the same time.
5.1 Traditional earthing by using the ground and earthing electrodes:
The fence conductors are the wires suspended on the insulated posts and the earthing conductor is the ground.
Connect the earthing terminal of the fence energiser to the ground via earthing rods driven into the ground. The best
place for earthing rods (electrodes) is a damp place near to the fence. The high power Olli electric fence energisers
require at least three earthing rods. Two earthing rods are recommended for the smaller Olli 100 and 300 models.
Additional earthing rods may be needed in dry conditions or when building long fences. The earthing rods must be
connected to the energiser with a wire that has a minimum diameter of 1 mm. Fix the connector wire to the earthing
rods firmly with screws. For the best result please use original Olli earthing rods and wires.
Never use any fixed structures such as pipelines or buildings for earthing a fence energiser.
Inadequate earthing is the most common cause to poor function of the fence and disturbances in radio devices or
telephones.
5.2 Two wire system
This system gives the best result in conditions where the ground has poor electric conductivity. This can be the case
in very dry conditions and on snowy ground.
Use two fence wires that are placed 10 cm from each other. The upper one is
the”live” wire, connect it to the fence
energiser. The lower wire is the “earth” wire; connect it to the earthing terminal of the energiser. The animal gets a
shock when it touches there two wires at the same time. However, we recommend connecting the earth wire also to
the ground with an earthing rod to minimise radio disturbances and to ensure the functionality of the fence.
6. Disturbances in electrical devices
The radio frequency of the pulse of a fence energiser is so low that a correctly installed electric fence does not
cause any visible or audible disturbances in radio devices. The main reason for disturbances (typically a snapping
noise in loudspeakers) is an inadequate or incorrectly implemented earthing of the fence. Check and fix the earthing
of the fence according to the chapter 4 in this guide.
The other typical reason for disturbances is sparking. A spark spreads a wire spectrum electromagnetic radiation
that can be heard as snapping in loudspeakers of as horizontal disturbance stripes in TV picture.
Visible sparks on fence wires are signs of poor connections. They cause disturbances and add resistance to the
fence thus reducing its effect. Always use proper connectors when connecting the energiser to the fence or
connecting wires to each other.
7. Thunder protection
Olli energisers are protected against over voltage and the Olli warranty covers also thunder damage. However, it is
not possible to build the fence energiser to withstand all possible situations. Therefore it is wise to use an Olli
lighting diverter whenever the fence is situated in very open ground or if thunder occurs frequently in the region. It is
also advisable to disconnect both the fence and mains power from the energiser if you leave your electric fence
unused for any longer time.
