4.3.2 Service valve does not close easily
Service valve does not close easily
When operating the service valve, the use of force should normally not be required for
closing the valve. If the valve cannot be closed, it is most likely due to one of the following
causes:
• There are large amounts of either sand or debris inside the valve, hampering the
rotation of the ball.
• The device is not fully retrieved.
• The device is fully retrieved, but the device length exceeds the capacity of the retriever.
Recommended actions
If the valve cannot be closed, the device must be reinstalled, and the valve inspected
in order to determine the reason for this problem.
4.3.3 Dirt in the by-pass valve does not allow you to balance
the pressure
Dirt in the by-pass valve does not allow you to balance the pressure
When dirt is in the by-pass valve, you might have difficulty opening the service valve,
especially when the line pressure is high (above 1,160 psi (80 bar)).
The pressure should then be balanced by use of the external pump. To balance the
pressure with the pump, use the following steps:
Recommended actions
1. Connect a pump (or another sort of pressure vessel) to the bleed off valve on
the retriever. Open the bleed valve and pressurize the retriever to a pressure
equal to actual pipe pressure.
2. Close the bleed valve to retain the pressure inside the retrieval tool. Disconnect
the pump from the bleed valve.
3. Open the service valve.
4. Clean out the debris.
4.4 Qualification requirements and training
programs for operators
Important
Attending the mechanical retrieval tool training course is not considered sufficient for
operating the tool on pressurized lines. Emerson requires a two-man crew with formal
training. Additionally, at least one of the operators must have a record of extensive field
experience and be certified for this work.
