2-11. T h e . 1 $ oscillators with model numbers ending i n "ES" are equipped f o r
external synchronization. T h e external sync signal should be approximately
10V peak-to-peak either sine o r square wave. T h i s signal i s transformer
isolated i n the oscillator to avoid cross-grounding problems. T h e external sync
terminals are connected to pins 11 a n d 12 o f J1, on the rear panel o f the Elgar
Power Source. T h e phase angle between the power source output and t h e s y n -
chronizing signal i s a function o f the synchronizing signal amplitude and wave-
shape and the difference between t h e oscillator free-running frequency and t h e
sync signal frequency. F i g u r e 2-1 illustrates a typical plug-in Oscillator/AC
Power Source Interconnection.
2-12. INTERCONNECTIONS FOR TWO OR THREE PHASE OPERATION
2-13. T h r e e - p h a s e oscillators may b e installed directly i n Elgar three-phase
power sources without special connections. W h e r e two-phase o r three-phase
power is made up b y stacking two o r three o f the Elgar single-phase power
sources, t h e oscillator is installed i n the A -phase power source. O s c i l l a t o r
signals are carried t o the B -phase and C -phase power sources through a cable
(furnished with the oscillator) interconnecting the J1 sockets on the r e a r panels
of the power source. T h e B -phase and C -phase power sources must have Model
4008 and 400C signal routing plug-ins installed to complete the signal i n t e r -
connections. T h e front panel AMPLITUDE control on the A -phase power sources
acts as a master control t o v a r y all t h e output simultaneously, while the B -
phase and C -phase AMPLITUDE controls act merely as balance controls t o set
the B -phase and C -phase output voltages equal t o the A -phase output voltage.
2-14. W i t h those single-phase Elgar Power Sources which have dual output
windings, two power sources may b e interconnected f o r three-phase wye opera-
tion. O n e o f the output windings on each o f the A -phase and B -phase sources
is used f o r the A -phase and B -phase outputs. T h e C -phase output is synthe-
sized b y inverse series connection o f the remaining two windings, as diagram-
med in Figure 2-2.
2-15. E X T E R N A L SIGNAL
2-16. Single-phase 0.1% and 0.01% oscillators are equipped with a f r o n t -panel
closed-circuit jack f o r external signal operation. A 2 - 3 V RMS external signal
may be introduced through a jack on t h e oscillator front panel. T h e closed-
circuit jack automatically disconnects the internal signal. T h e front panel
amplitude control is effective with t h e external signal connection.
