Enabling printing from UNIX and UNIX-like workstations
You can print directly to the PS-17 from any workstation that meets the standard specifications for UNIX and
UNIX-like workstations.
To create the printer connections, follow the procedures provided in the documentation for your UNIX or UNIX-
like distribution.
The PS-17 supports the standard UNIX printing options. For example, from the UNIX shell, you can use the lpr
command to send the job, specifying the PS-17 remote printer name as a destination.
The PS-17 supports the following remote printer names:
•
•
hold
•
name of virtual printer
(virtual printers display as printer name : virtual printer name)
As an option, you can set the PS-17 printer name listed above as the default printer (requires an administrator
account with root privileges). On BSD workstations, edit the /etc/printcap file to specify the PS-17 as the remote
printer (rp). On Solaris workstations, use the lpadmin command to configure the queuename.
Configure user access
You can configure user accounts and user groups in
Configure
>
User Accounts
.
Users and groups
Use Configure to create users, assign passwords to users, create groups with specific privileges, and assign users to
the groups.
Several groups are provided by default, and you can create new groups. All users in a group have the same privileges.
In addition to assigning the users to a group, you can add users from your organization’s global address list if you
enable LDAP services on the PS-17. The following topics are an overview designed to help you prepare a security
strategy. You can view detailed information about users and groups in Command WorkStation.
For more information, see
Command WorkStation Help
.
User authentication
The PS-17 uses user authentication to verify that the user who is sending a job belongs to a group that has printing
privileges.
You can control user authentication on the PS-17 from Configure in
Security
>
Printing Privileges
.
•
By default,
Allow printing from
is set to
All users
, meaning authentication is not required and anyone can send
jobs to the PS-17. Even if you assign passwords to users and assign users to groups, authentication is not
required.
•
If you set
Allow printing from
to
Authorized users
, users must enter their user name and password in the printer
driver when they print. Users must specify their user name and password if they create files from the printer
driver for printing later (such as an email attachment that is sent to the PS-17).
