HBBTV system
HbbTV (Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV) is a new industry standard that seamlessly combines TV services
delivered via broadcast with services delivered via broadband. It also allows access to consumer-only internet
services using connected TV and set-top boxes. Services provided through HbbTV include traditional broadcast
TV channels, catch-up services, video-on-demand, EPG, interactive advertising, personalisation, voting, games,
social networking and other multimedia applications.
HbbTV apps are available on channels where they are designated by the broadcaster. The broadcast will mark
one app as "auto launch" and it will launch on the platform automatically. Auto-launch apps are usually marked
with a small red button icon to alert the user that an HbbTV app is available on that channel. Press the red
button to open the app page. After the page is displayed, you can return to the original state of the red icon
by pressing the red button. You can switch between the red button icon mode by pressing the red button. It
should be noted that the ability to toggle the red button is provided by the application and some applications
may behave differently (other colored buttons, such as green, yellow, blue, may be defined for some other
functions, e.g. shortcuts).
If the user switches to another channel while the HbbTV app is active (in red button icon mode or full UI mode),
the following can happen.
•
The application can continue to run.
•
The application can be terminated.
•
The application can be terminated and another red button autostart application can be started.
HbbTV allows applications to run from both broadband and broadcast TV. The operator may offer both options
or only one of them. If a platform does not have a working broadband connection, it can still run applications
transmitted over the TV broadcast.
The red button app provides links to other apps. The user can then switch to other applications using the links
provided. The application must provide a way to exit itself; usually the Exit button is used for this.
HbbTv apps use buttons on the remote control to interact with the user. When the HbbTV application is
launched, the application controls some of the buttons. Example: numeric channel selection will not work on
a teletext application where the numbers indicate the teletext pages.
HbbTV requires AV streaming capability for the platform. There are many apps that provide VOD (video on
demand) and catch-up TV services. The user can use the start, pause, stop, forward and rewind buttons on the
remote control to work with AV content.
