You are likely to be familiar with the term HbA1c. This is a measure of glucose levels
over a 2 – 3 month period. What is actually being measured is the amount of glucose
stuck to haemoglobin in red blood cells. The higher the glucose level the more sEcks
to blood cells. Over the last few years the unit for HbA1c has changed from % to
mmol/mol. Good control is typically described as 58 mmol/mol or less. Ideal control
is less than 48 mmol/mol but this can be very difficult to achieve without significant
hypoglycaemia.
