Electrical Juncture Recommendations
•
Recommend not using more than three (3) ring terminals per mounting stud.
•
Terminals such as ring, bullet, spade, etc., should be sized for the correct current capacity of the circuit as stated by
the manufacturer.
•
Terminals should be plated and non-insulated. Plating materials of metallic mechanical connections points should have
metallurgical compatibility.
•
Recommendation relative to use of shrink tubing to seal crimp junctures
- Terminal sleeves should be insulated with a double wall adhesive lined shrink tubing.
- Cable construction for use of shrink tube should only a single conductor per barrel.
- Barrels should be closed ended or sealed as part of the terminal insulator design.
- Multiple wires in same barrel do not seal.
- Design should be demonstrated to operate in SAE J-1455 environment.
•
Highly recommend over-molded battery cable terminals.
•
Sealing Dielectric grease over the surface of the ring terminals is recommended.
•
Recommend that split ring or star lock washers not be used for electrical contact surfaces. Mechanical retentions
system should not damage plating integrity.
•
Recommend all sealed connectors be vacuum tested to assure all wires and wire filers are in place and functioning.
•
Recommend all electrical distribution studs have manufacturing torque control in place.
•
Recommend corrosion protectant be applied to all exposed electrical distribution studs and associated ring terminals.
•
Minimize the number of mechanical connection points to Eaton transmission components and other critical
components such as ABS system, and Engine Control system.
Troubleshooting Recommendations
Harness Troubleshooting and Test Equipment Design Recommendations
•
Opening a switch contact or the main power link is the recommended method of interrupting power.
•
Recommend not removing fuses as the method of disconnecting power to the TCM or ECA. This causes fuse holder
contact damage, and weakening of the contact spring-force.
Caution:
Making and breaking a circuit through tin plated terminals (e.g. ring terminals, fuses, and most connectors) will destroy
the plating on the terminal.
Caution:
Recommend that OEM harness insulation is not punctured for diagnostics purposes. Damage to the wire insulation
can lead to immediate or future failures of the harness or electronic control unit due to short circuits, water entry,
or corrosion.
•
If a connection to the harness or TCM is required before vehicle installation, Eaton recommends the use of a connector
with a spring loaded contact rather than a standard mating connector. The spring loaded contact is intended to make the
electrical connection with the tip of the terminal without touching the mating surface. This will protect the terminal
plating, contact lubricant, and retain the original durability and reliability of the connector system.
Note:
Contact your Eaton OEM Engineering Support Group for additional information.
Vehicle Service Recommendations for Electronics
Recommend disconnecting all electronic controls when electric welding is performed on the vehicle. Rational: Ground path
differentials can cause overvoltage to electronic control I/O even if the battery plus and minus are disconnected.
