Instructions for the installation and

commissioning of Power Xpert

IGX

medium-voltage switchgear

4.13.  Installing cable side surge arresters

ote:

N

It may be desirable to install surge arrestors after voltage withstand

testing. Refer to

5.2.2.1. Preparation for PFWV test

Cable side surge arresters (if furnished) can be installed in a

cable connector tank inner cone, in the same fashion as any inner

cone connection. Refer to the arrester manufacturer’s installation

instructions for installation guidance.

Figure 28.   Typical cable side arrester (direct connected at the

cable connector tank).

1.  Clean the surge arrester connector using the furnished Cleaning

cloths soaked in cleaning solvent (see section

2.2.1. Standard

accessories (included with Power Xpert IGX):

)

.

2.  Apply silicone grease to the cable connector tank inner cone

bushing.

3.  Install the surge arrester into the cable connector tank bushing.

Bolt it into place using

(4) M10 x 30 SHCS
(4) M10 flat washers
(4) M10 split lock washers

4.14.  Installing cable side VTs

ote:

N

It may be desirable to install VTs after voltage withstand testing. Refer

to

5.2.2.1. Preparation for PFWV test.

Cable side voltage transformers are mounted remotely and

connected to a cable connector tank inner cone receptacle using an

inner cone connector terminated cable.
Refer to the inner cone cable connector manufacturer’s installation

instructions for guidance on terminating the VT cable and connecting

it to a cable connection tank inner cone.

4.15.  Cable connections

Power Xpert IGX switchgear is designed for bottom entry power

cables only. Cables are supported by clamps provided in the cable

compartment to reduce mechanical stress on connections and

prevent movement in the event of a fault. Depending upon the

design, there may be external voltage transformers located remotely

from the cable compartment but connected with cable connectors in

the Power Xpert IGX cable compartment.
All cable termination connectors are provided by others and installed

in the field.

4.16.  Guidelines for customer selection of inner cone

connectors

Inner cone connectors can be obtained from several vendors,

including Eaton/Cooper, Pfisterer, and Shendian. The connector size

to be used will be determined by the Power Xpert IGX switchgear

rating.
See

Figure 29

for an example cable side inner cone connector. Refer

to the inner cone connector manufacturer’s instructions for guidance

on terminating the cable and installing the connector into the cable

connector tank inner cone.

Figure 29.   Typical cable side inner cone connector.

4.17.  Grounding

Power Xpert IGX groups must have their internal ground buses

connected to adjacent shipping groups or vertical sections. In

addition, the switchgear lineup must be connected to the customer

ground system at the lineup ends and at intermediate points within

the lineup as required. Individual Power Xpert IGX vertical sections

are connected to adjacent vertical sections using grounding splice

plates (see below).
Connect the vertical section horizontal ground buses using a copper
splice plate (see

Figure 30

and

 Figure 31.

Connect the switchgear assembly to the station ground. Solderless

connections are provided on the ground bus at each end of the

switchgear for this purpose. The connection shall be made as direct

as possible. The connection shall be large enough to carry the

ground fault current of the installation. Never encase the ground bus

in a metal conduit.

CAUTION

THE SWITCHGEAR INSTALLATION MUST BE PROPERLY GROUNDED.

N

For the design and installation of a grounding system, refer to Electrical

Power Distribution for Industrial Plants (Institute of Electrical Electronic

Engineers [IEEE] std 141); Grounding of Industrial and Commercial

Power Systems (IEEE std 142); and the NFPA 70, Articles 100, 200, and

250.
