17. Open the cylinder valve of the breathing apparatus.

WARNING

Do not direct the air flow on to the face, eyes or skin.

Pressurized air flow can cause serious injuries.

18. Firmly press the centre of the rubber cover of the lung demand

valve to activate the air flow for 3 to 5 seconds. Press the reset

button on the lung demand valve to stop the flow (positive-

pressure only).

Standard:

An unobstructed air flow will vent from the outlet of

the lung demand valve. The breathing apparatus pressure

reading may decrease, as the air supply is from the air cylinder

of the breathing apparatus.

19. Close the cylinder valve and fully vent the system.

20. Press the reset button on the lung demand valve (positive-

pressure only).

21. Connect the lung demand valve to the face mask.

3.3

During use

The person responsible for the breathing air system should

establish and implement procedures for the use of the equipment

according to the environment in which it is used. In particular, the

procedures should describe the actions required in the event of

failure of the external air source. All wearers must be fully trained

in those procedures, and should proceed in line with established

procedures if failure of the external air source occurs.

WARNING

Position the external air source in a safe and

uncontaminated area. Dräger recommend that a controller

should monitor and maintain the external air source

throughout any operation.
The volume of air in the air cylinder of the self-contained

breathing apparatus must allow the wearer sufficient time

to evacuate to a safe area.

1. Put on the breathing apparatus (see the Instructions for Use of

the self-contained breathing apparatus).

2. Press the reset button on the lung demand valve (positive-

pressure only).

3. Open the cylinder valve. The high-pressure whistle will

momentarily sound.

4. Put on the face mask and carry out the mask fit tests detailed

in the Instructions for Use of the face mask.

5. Briefly press the centre of the rubber cover of the lung demand

valve to activate and check the supplementary supply facility.

6. Open the valve of the external air source to pressurize the

system.

7. Connect the external air source to the male coupling on the belt

manifold. The low-pressure whistle will briefly sound, indicating

that the system has switched to use the external air source.

8. Breathe normally and proceed to the work area.

WARNING

If the low-pressure whistle sounds at any time during an

operation, the PAS

®

ASV has switched to supply the

wearer from the breathing apparatus air cylinder. If this

occurs, proceed in line with established procedures.
If you continue to work while breathing from the air cylinder

of the self-contained breathing apparatus, when connected

to an inoperative external air source, regularly check the

cylinder contents indicator. The volume of air in the air

cylinder must allow sufficient time to evacuate to a safe

area.

9. Withdraw from the work area when the task is complete, when

advised by a controller, or in line with established procedures.

Use the relevant method from the following:

a. Breathing from the external air source (airline mode): see

Section 3.3.1.

b. Breathing from the self-contained breathing apparatus air

cylinder (self-contained mode): see Section 3.3.2.

3.3.1

Evacuation – Airline mode

1. Leave the external air source connected to the belt manifold,

and hold and carefully withdraw the external supply airline

hose during evacuation.

2. Proceed to the designated exit area (or another safe area).

3.3.2

Evacuation – Self-contained mode

WARNING

Air use from the air cylinder of the self-contained breathing

apparatus begins from the time that the low-pressure

whistle sounds.
Do not use the supplementary supply facility during

evacuation unless it is essential. Using the facility will

decrease the breathing time from the air cylinder.

1. Disconnect the external air source from the belt manifold and

continue to breathe normally. If it is sounding, the low-pressure

whistle will stop.

2. Proceed to the designated area (or another safe area).

3. During evacuation check the cylinder pressure regularly and

note that the high-pressure whistle will sound at the preset

pressure.

3.4

After use

WARNING

Do not remove equipment until in safe area, clear of

hazard.

1. If the external air source is still connected, disconnect it from

the belt manifold and continue to breathe normally.

2. Remove the face mask and breathing apparatus (see the

Instructions for Use supplied with the self-contained breathing

apparatus).

4

Troubleshooting

See also the Instructions for Use supplied with the self-contained

breathing apparatus, the face mask and any other breathing

equipment used.

5

Maintenance

Service and test the breathing apparatus, including out-of-use

apparatus, in accordance with the maintenance table. Record all

service details and testing. Refer also to the Instructions for Use

for the lung demand valve, face mask and other associated

equipment.

Additional inspection and testing may be required in the country of

use to ensure compliance with national regulations.

5.1

Cleaning and disinfecting

CAUTION

Do not exceed 60 °C for drying, and remove components

from the drying facility immediately when dry. Drying time

in a heated dryer must not exceed 30 minutes.
Do not immerse pneumatic or electronic components in

cleaning solutions or water.
If water is trapped and then freezes inside the pneumatic

system of the breathing apparatus, operation will be

impaired. Prevent any liquid from entering, and thoroughly

dry the breathing apparatus after cleaning to prevent this

from occurring.

For information about suitable cleaning and disinfecting

agents and their specifications refer to document 9100081

on www.draeger.com/IFU.

Refer also to the Instructions for Use for the lung demand valve,

face mask and other associated equipment.

Use only clean lint-free cloths

1. Clean the PAS

®

ASV manually using a cloth moistened with

cleaning solution to remove excess dirt.

2. Apply disinfecting solution to all internal and external surfaces.

3. Rinse all components thoroughly with clean water to remove all

cleaning and disinfecting agents.

4. Dry all components using a dry cloth, in a heated dryer or in air.

Storage

If the PAS

®

ASV is fitted to a self-contained breathing apparatus,

store as detailed in the Instructions for Use of the breathing

apparatus.

If the PAS

®

ASV is not fitted, store as follows:

Place any small parts in a plastic bag and attach to the

PAS

®

 ASV.

Route the rubber hose so that the bend radius is not too acute

and the hose is not stretched, compressed or twisted.

Store the equipment between -15 °C and +25 °C. Ensure that

the environment is dry, free from dust and dirt, and does not

subject the equipment to wear or damage due to abrasion. Do

not store the equipment in direct sunlight.

7

Disposal

When required, dispose of the PAS

®

ASV in line with local or

national regulations.
