GAIN SETTING BRIEF
This brief is designed to provide a simple and accurate procedure for signal level or gain
setting in mobile audio systems.
Tools & Equipment Required:
- Digital Multi-meter (DMM)
- Oscilloscope
- Test Tone CD w/ 1 kHz tone, 0 dB, -6 dB, and -10 dB.
- Custom Adapter Cable (see below)
1/2 Mono Enable
Pushing this button “IN” creates a mono signal for use with subwoofer systems. When
mono mode is selected, only RCA input channel 1 is used. Leaving the button “OUT”
defaults the amp to normal stereo mode.
D9 800.4
3/4 Mono Enable
Pushing this button “IN” creates a mono signal for use with subwoofer systems. When
mono mode is selected, only RCA input channel 3 is used. Leaving the button “OUT”
defaults the amp to normal stereo mode.
1. Disconnect all signal wire from all components in system including RCA's and
speaker wire.
2. Plug custom adapter cable into the outputs of the head unit.
3. Power up the head unit and set all bass, treble, processing and EQ controls to flat or
0, turn loudness control off.
Note:
A properly tuned system should only use the bass and treble controls
on the head unit to cut the signal, never to boost. Likewise, the loudness
control should never be needed in a system with amplifiers.
4. Insert the test tone CD, set it to the 1 kHz track at 0 dB, and push repeat.
5. Turn the head unit volume up to approximately half way.
6. Connect the Oscilloscope probes to the alligator clips on the custom adapter cable.
Set the scope to see an unclipped 1 kHz sine wave from the head unit.
7. Turn the head unit volume up slowly until the sine wave on the scope starts to clip
(become square at the top and bottom of the wave).
