1.4 PULSED ILLUMINATION
When building multi-camera stations with standard continuous light illuminators, the
illumination areas must be accurately chosen to avoid the illuminator of one camera
disturbing the acquisition of another camera. In particular the lobes of the side camera
illuminators must not cross over the conveyor belt. This constraint leads to long multisided
reading stations.

In
Pulsed Illumination systems, an illuminator is switched on only durin
g its camera’s
acquisition time. All the cameras are then synchronized so cameras with crossing illuminator
lobes never acquire simultaneously. When a camera is not supposed to acquire, its
electronic shutter is closed and the camera is completely blind. In this way, the illuminator of
one camera does not disturb the acquisition of another camera, even if their illumination
lobes cross in the camera field of view.
Using pulsed illumination, the side cameras’ illumination lobes can cross on the conveyor
and the reading station dimensions can be greatly reduced.
