closed. Add Vaseline to the top of the plug. Some force may be required to fully
set the rubber plug.
8.
Level the bowl. Try rotating the bowl before shimming the bottom of the
pedestal, as concrete casting is always inexact.
9.
Run the clear plastic tubing through the finial. Connect the bottom of the tubing
to the nipple on top of the pump and then set the finial down over the pump
(and pump house if supplied). Make sure you do not kink or crimp the tubing in
the process, unless you desire a smaller flow of water.
**NOTE** For the #499 Plaza Fountain be sure to use the two rubber plugs
supplied with this water feature in their appropriate location. The first rubber
plug has a smaller hole for the pumps electrical cord to leave the lower bowl
down through the pedestal. The second rubber plug has a slightly larger hole
which allows the ¼” clear plastic hose to travel up from the pump hidden in the
two piece pump house in the larger lower bowl, through the smaller pedestal,
through the smaller bowl (where the rubber plug needs to be installed), up
through the small riser and finial. Take care with each new piece that it is
seated firmly and does not ‘wobble’, shims can help to remove any ‘sway’.
10.
Place the finial over the pump. When sure that the plastic tubing is not kinked
and the pump is firmly seated in the bottom of the bowl, gently lift the tubing
(with pump attached below) about 1/8
th
inch and cut off the excess tubing. The
goal is to have the top of the tubing a fraction below the top of the concrete
finial. With plumber's putty seal the space between the tubing and the finial (so
water does not run back down the centre.)
11.
Fill the fountain with room-‐temperature water. Cold water poured into a warm
fountain can cause the bowl to crack. The reverse is true also.
12.
Plug the pump into your source of electricity. Always use properly grounded
circuits and extension cords. Protect any connection from water, and inspect
electrical wire for damage or defects each year.
13.
Adjust placement of finials to gain uniform water distribution and adjust pump
for desired water flow.
14.
Reminder
: Water is the ultimate test of ‘level’. Slight shifts in placement of the
bowl with shims such as pennies or washers can shift the water for the desired
effect. Trial and error is the best strategy when adjusting water flow.
15.
Reminder
: Fountain bowls and pumps CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO FREEZE WITH
WATER IN THEM. Disassemble and store bowls, pumps and finials in winter. Or
cover fountains from gathering water during freezing months.
