The product is only designed for use in dry indoors, it must not get damp or wet, lethal danger
through electric shock!

The product is not a toy and should be kept out of the reach of children.

Do not carelessly leave the packaging material lying around since it could become a dangerous
plaything for children.

Handle the product with care; knocks, blows or even a fall from a low height can damage it.

Installation of a SATA hard disc

• Pull both parts of the enclosure apart; if the insert is already screwed in upon delivery, remove

the enclosure screws (2 screws on the left side, 2 screws on the right side).

• Insert the SATA hard disk in the insert and screw it tight with 4 screws.

• Slide the insert back into the enclosure ensuring the correct position.

• Secure the insert in the enclosure with 4 screws.

Connection

Use either the USB connection or the eSATA connection. Connecting the case
via eSATA and via USB at the same time is not possible!

• Switch off the hard disk enclosure (switch position “O”).

• Connect the low voltage plug of the mains adaptor (included in the delivery) with the corres-

ponding socket on the back of the hard disk enclosure.

• Connect the mains adaptor with the mains voltage.

• To connect the hard disk enclosure to the computer, use either the USB connection or the

eSATA connection. Switch on the hard disk enclosure (switch position “I”).

• Switch your computer on, and wait until the operating system has booted completely.

• Windows now recognises the drive automatically and completes the driver installation. The

drivers are already included in Windows (at least Windows ME is required).

A new hard disk has to be partitioned and formatted first, before the drive is displayed
in Explorer and can be used, see next section.

Partitioning / formatting the hard disk

• Partitioning and formatting is very easy in Windows XP and Vista via the computer adminis-

tration. This is where you select the correct hard drive and create a new partition. Afterwards
it has to be formatted (quick formatting is sufficient).

• In Windows ME, the DOS commands „FDISK“ (for partitioning) and „FORMAT“ (for formatting)

are required.

Start the MSDOS prompt and enter „FDISK“. Under menu option „5. Changing of current hard
drive“, the external hard disk drive has to be selected. Example: If you only have one internal
hard disk drive, select hard drive „2“. Afterwards, a primary partition can be created.

Exit FDISK by pressing the ESC button and reboot your computer.

The partition on the new hard disk can be formatted either via the Windows Explorer or with
the „FORMAT“ command in the MSDOSprompt (always make sure that the new hard disk is
formatted and not an already existing hard disk or partition, loss of data!).

Handling

The product is only to be used in dry indoor locations. The product must not get damp or wet.
The following unfavourable conditions are to be avoided when installing or transporting the pro-
duct:

- Damp or excess air humidity
- Extreme coldness or heat, direct sunlight
- Dust or flammable gases, fumes or solvents
- Strong vibrations, impacts or blows,
- Strong magnetic fields, such as in the proximity of machines or loudspeakers

Never use the product immediately after it has been brought from a cold into a warm room. The
condensation that forms might destroy your unit.

Allow the device to reach room temperature before connecting it to the power supply.
This may take several hours.

Any maintenance or repair work must only be carried out by authorised personnel.

When installing the device, make sure the cables are not bent or jammed.

Tips & notes

• USB devices can be connected and disconnected during operation.

You should, however, take into account that data may be corrupted or the operating system
may crash if the connection cable is disconnected while data are being transferred (or the
enclosure is switched off or the power unit is disconnected).

In Windows ME/XP, an arrow symbol is displayed in the menu bar when a USB device is in
operation. Click this arrow symbol to „separate“ the device, i.e. to terminate data transmission,
so you can disconnect the connection cable without risking losing data.

• USB 2.0 devices are backwards compatible. This means that the USB 2.0 case with the built-

in hard disk also works on conventional “slower” USB1.1 ports – but in this case only with the
maximum USB1.1 speed (effectively approx. max. 1MByte/s). Several MBytes/sec is possible
with USB 2.0.

• The USB hard disk cannot be operated with DOS or Windows NT.

• The power LED flashes, when the hard disk enclosure is supplied with power via the power

adaptor. The access LED blinks, when data are read on the hard disk or when data is written
on the hard disk.

Possible problems during eSATA operation:

• Despite USB, it is possible that the hard disk case is not recognised when connected to a

computer, which is switched on; or when it is switched on after the operating system has started.

In this case, restart Windows while the hard disk case remains switched on.

Whether the connected hard disk enclosure is recognised by a computer/operating system,
which is switched on, depends on the eSATA controller used  and its driver.

• Do not switch off the hard disk enclosure when the computer has not yet shut down. Shut down

the operating system first. Then the hard disk enclosure can be switched off.

Disposal

When disposing of an unserviceable product, do so in keeping with the relevant
statutory regulations.
